  • Research Innovations and Extensions

Professional ethics and honesty are the two most fundamental and essential components of the academic activities be it teaching or scientific research. Teaching and Research is a noble profession based on extremely high moral values. Therefore, institute assumes its duty to nurture these ethical values among teachers and students. In academic and scientific research activities, it is obligatory to recognize others work and to give due credit to them for the same. In any case, the claim of any teacher or student for the research work which he/she has not undertaken or any ideas presented which is not the original cannot be justified. GHRIEM, Jalgaon shares its responsibility to educate students and teaching community of the institute about plagiarism, its detection and implications. The institute sets high level of standards to maintain the research integrity and ethics. In view of this, institute expects that all the teachers, students and its alumni should follow these standards strictly and should not get involved in any kind of plagiarism knowingly or unknowingly or any activity which damages the reputation of the institute.

If the faculty members or students present the words, data or ideas from others work, research articles, books or any published literature without acknowledging the original authors, then it is treated as a theft of intellectual property and research misconduct. This definition of plagiarism is equally applicable to both review articles and literature review sections of the research papers in addition to original research results or interpretations. One should remember that plagiarism not only violate the standard code of ethics, in many cases, it may constitute violation of the law by invading on a copyright held by the original author or publisher

    General rules and Guidelines

    • Acknowledging other’s work:
It is an essential part of ethics in research to give credit to work reported by others, may be in any form: published or unpublished, written or an oral presentation, or reported on a website. Therefore, if any data or the text is used or copied from any published literature, it should be referenced to the original source. However, it is not necessary to give references to the texts which describe fundamental principles and well-established concepts or methodology which may be found in common textbooks.
    • Reporting plagiarism
It is the duty and ethical responsibility of all the faculty members and students to report the suspected research misconduct and plagiarism to the concerned HOD or Principal of the Institute. The allegations made by the faculty or students would be fairly handled by the authority as per the procedures described in the policy of the institute. It is sure that no actions will be initiated against the faculty or students reporting such suspected cases of plagiarism.
    • Role of Guide/Supervisor
The faculty member working as a guide should inform the student or group of students about the code of ethics and implications of the plagiarism. Faculty member should check the details of experimental procedures, observations and its validity reported by the students, tables, graphs, and presentations prepared by the students to ensure the scientific integrity of the whole research work.

It is mandatory for all the students to submit a signed declaration that they are aware of the plagiarism policy of the Institute and no part of their work be it assignment, project report, thesis or dissertation, etc. is not copied in any form and it is their own creation.
    • Educating Students
It is important to educate the students about the implications of plagiarism and research misconduct. Therefore, it is the shared responsibility of all the HODs and faculty members to counsel the students for not to plagiarize and to maintain the high standards of research in the institute.
    • Honesty in Research
It is an ethical obligation for all the authors/co-authors and faculty/students presenting either research paper, thesis or project work to ensure that the reported conclusions are based on accurately recorded data or observations and to report all the true data including contradicting observations or negative results. It is the part of research integrity and honesty to be maintained by all the investigators during the research work.

    Mechanism to Check Plagiarism

    • Identification and assessment of alleged plagiarism
For usual checks of plagiarism in thesis or dissertation reports, faculty members and students in the department are asked to use best possible software available in open source before the submission of thesis and the link for which is provided on the institute website.
If faculty member/examiner detects or is made aware of alleged plagiarism by any other faculty member or student, he/she must report the alleged plagiarism to HOD or Principal of the Institute. The subject expert or committee appointed by the Principal would be requested to check the plagiarism and its degree. The member in the committee would be selected on the basis of his/her subject knowledge, awareness of plagiarism and the knowledge of tools available to detect the plagiarism. In order to establish whether there is a plagiarism or not, the committee of experts may use the best possible software for detecting the plagiarism. This empowered committee will have to submit the report along with its recommendation to the Principal for final decision. If any faculty or student is found guilty of plagiarism, Principal is empowered to initiate the disciplinary action against such faculty member or student. Depending on the severity of the case, the punishment could be:
    • Fine or caution notice
      Temporary or permanent Suspension
Reporting to University for further action, in case of students

    • Fairness in handling alleged plagiarism
The college is committed to identify and to resolve the cases of alleged plagiarism from any teacher or student with due process of fairness. The guidelines for handling alleged plagiarism impartially are stated as below.
    • The committee would inform about the precise nature of the allegations to the person against whom allegations are made enabling him/her to respond properly.
An opportunity would be given to the person to respond against the allegations within a reasonable time period.
The matter would be resolved quickly in a specific time frame.
The investigation process and decisions on allegations would be taken impartially without any bias.
